All-body awards went to Michael Smith, head track and field coach, and Dalton McAfee, a 2019 cadet who captained the hockey team.

"It means a lot. It's not something you ever think about. It's very humbling and I feel lucky to win," MacAfee said. "It was surreal to be interviewed for this and to win is incredible. There are so many amazing people here. It's what makes Ust Point so special. It's such an honor to be considered at this level."

Competitive Club Awards were presented to Kenneth Allen, Triathlon Team Officer, and 2019 Cadet Tyler Rees, a member of the Marathon Team.

The company-level athletic trainer award was presented to Major Robert Squire, who oversees the program, and the athlete award went to 2019 cadet Ethan Press, who plays on the company I-1 handball team.

"It means a lot," Squire said. "We put a lot of time and effort into corporate athletics, and I think a lot of times corporate athletics is misunderstood because of what they're trying to achieve. People get frustrated with the time and effort they put into it.

"They will miss the lessons they learn about building important teams and being leaders on and off the field. Those experiences will mean a lot over the years," he added.

Before the awards banquet in the Cadet Mess Hall, the winners and finalists for the awards participated in a leadership roundtable with Krzyzewski and academic leaders to talk about character and how it can be built through athletics.

To receive an award that represents him and the character that he has is a huge honor," Press said. "It's humbling to receive this and to be nominated by my peers. It's a sign that I'm doing the right thing and representing a small part of Coach K."

Krzyzewski's leadership lessons weren't just for the panelists, as he made his opening remarks at the reception before presenting the awards that bear his name.

As a member of the 50-year affiliate class of 2019, Krzyzewski said he will return to West Point in a few weeks to celebrate his 50-year class reunion.

While the goal is to celebrate his 50th year of graduation, Krzyzewski said what he will really celebrate is his 50th year as a leader, first as an officer and then as a high school basketball coach.

"I learned to be a leader here and I learned to be a leader of character," Krzyzewski said. "There is no better school in the world for teaching leadership and teaching character than this. It is a great school, and we are all incredibly blessed by the people who have dedicated their lives to making it better."

One of the lessons he learned from his years as a leader, he says, is to change and adapt to connect with those you lead. Whether it's an 18-year-old basketball phenom like Zion Williamson or a squad of soldiers, building and making connections is key to leadership, Krzyzewski said.

"Keep changing and adapting, getting better and being relevant," Krzyzewski said. "As a result, you establish the key thing in leadership, and that is relationships. Trusting a relationship full of character with your team. It always changes how you connect. What never changes is what you connect with? " It's the things you connect with . can't change the things you are learning now that are not in the books. They are called values."

In the 54 years since Krzyzewski arrived at the Animal barracks, the most important day of his life after his marriage and the birth of his daughters, he said, you cannot give up anything - it is honesty, respect, courage, selfless service , duty, trust and loyalty.
